Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens is a group of floral display gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada, located near Victoria on Vancouver Island. The gardens receive more than a million visitors each year. The gardens have been designated a National Historic Site of Canada due to their international renown.

Robert Pim Butchart (1856–1943) began manufacturing Portland cement in 1888 near his birthplace of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. He and his wife Jennie Butchart (1866–1950) came to the west coast of Canada because of rich limestone deposits necessary for cement production.

In 1904, they established their home near his quarry on Tod Inlet at the base of the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island.

In 1907, 65 year old garden designer Isaburo Kishida of Yokohama came to Victoria, at the request of his son, to build a tea garden for Esquimalt Gorge Park. This garden was wildly popular and a place to be seen. Several prominent citizens, Jennie Butchart among them, commissioned Japanese gardens from Kishida for their estates. He returned to Japan in 1912.

Great Dixter Flower Garden

Great Dixter is a house in Northiam, East Sussex close to the South Coast of England. It has a famous garden which is regarded as the epitome of English plantsmanship.

The original house at Dixter, Northiam, which dates from the mid 15th century, was acquired by a businessman named Nathaniel Lloyd in 1909. He had a 16th century house in a similar style moved from Kent and the two were combined with new work by the architect Edwin Lutyens to create a much larger house, which was rechristened Great Dixter. It is a romantic recreation of a medieval manor house, complete with great hall, parlour, solar and yeoman's hall.

The house and garden are open to the public from April to the end of October. Study days, workshops and lectures are held frequently. A charity called the Great Dixter Charitable Trust has been established to ensure that the property is preserved.

One of the pleasant features about the gardens is that they lie all the house. Make a circuit of the gardens and you have made a circuit of the house exterior. Each has good views of the other.

Most of the garden design was by Lutyens; it always seems Fluid, never stodgy. Thus, yew hedges are sometimes curve, making a change from straight lines. He often used tiles in a decorative manner. Thus, a chicken house with rotten walls was turned into an open side loggia, supported by laminated tile pillars. In so far as possible, Lutyens incorporated farm buildings into design, turning them to other uses. Four brick cattle drinking tanks were retained; we have now filed these in and planted them.

About Flowers

A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants (plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms). The biological function of a flower is to effect reproduction, usually by providing a mechanism for the union of sperm with eggs. Flowers may facilitate outcrossing (fusion of sperm and eggs from different individuals in a population) or allow selfing (fusion of sperm and egg from the same flower). Some flowers produce diaspores without fertilization (parthenocarpy). Flowers contain sporangia and are the site where gametophytes develop. Flowers give rise to fruit and seeds. Many flowers have evolved to be attractive to animals, so as to cause them to be vectors for the transfer of pollen.
In addition to facilitating the reproduction of flowering plants, flowers have long been admired and used by humans to beautify their environment, but also as objects of romance, ritual, religion, medicine and as a source of food.

How Are Flowers Useful to Us?

Importance

  • Flowers are not just beautiful to look at, but they also serve a vital role in our ecosystem. Flowers attract insects and birds, which serve as pollinators for the plant itself. Insects and birds also help keep the surrounding ecosystem of flowers well maintained and healthy by keeping away predators, and utilizing the plants or flowers for their own growth. All plants produce a flower at some point during the process of their growth. The flower itself produces seeds, which are then pollinated by either being transported by birds or insects, or by being released into the wind or dropped from the plant. Flowers help keep the ecosystem growing and provide new plant life, as well as help sustain local insects and birds.

Benefits to Humans

  • In addition to the benefits flowers provide to the local ecosystem, they also greatly benefit humans. The natural bugs and birds that flowers attract help keep our own surrounding environment healthy. The seeds that flowers drop and pollinate locally produce more plants, and more fruits and vegetables for us to eat. In addition, certain bugs--such as bees, produce honey from the nectar of the flowers, but also pollinate the flowers as they do so--allowing them to produce seeds. The bugs and birds flowers attract help keep some "bad" bugs away, such as bugs that may eat or destroy other plants.

Environmental Factors

  • Without insects or birds to help pollinate flowers, they would have no way of reproducing to create new flowers or growth. Flowers help our ecosystem flourish and attract a plethora of life to the area and facilitate the expansion of our environment. If flowers are cut down or destroyed before pollination can occur, that particular species has a high chance of dying off in that area. In addition, local wildlife will also vanish in that area since they would have no food.

Canna Lily

Canna (or Canna lily, although not a true lily) is a genus of nineteen species of flowering plants. The closest living relations to cannas are the other plant families of the order Zingiberales, that is the gingers, bananas, marantas, heliconias, strelitzias, etc.
Canna is the only genus in the family Cannaceae. Such a family has almost universally been recognized by taxonomists. The APG II system of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, 1998) also recognizes the family, and assigns it to the order Zingiberales in the clade commelinids, in the monocots.
The species have large, attractive foliage and horticulturists have turned it into a large-flowered and bright garden plant. In addition, it is one of the world's richest starch sources, and is an agricultural plant.
